You Don’t Know Jack About Video Search Marketing
June 2, 2008 · Internet Marketing
… and I can prove it. In fact, I’m willing to bet, you’re making some pretty silly mistakes in using video in your search marketing efforts. Search Engine Land has covered the biggest mistakes I find my clients making when they are using videos as a search marketing tool — MythBusters: Why Video Should Be a Core Search Marketing Tool. There is so much misinformation floating around, it’s no wonder solopreneurs are so stinkin’ confused.
2 video myths that get our goat:
Submit, submit, submit — more is better. Wrong! We definitely agree with SEL here. That monthly service you pay to have your video blasted across the Net might not be the best investment you could make. If you’re targeting search engine traffic and you have a comprehensive SEO Plan (or, at least in the process of forming one), you’ve got to consider the use of your videos wisely. Much like other “optimize-able” content, you really need to be creating and publishing strategically. More is not necessarily better here.
Good videos, are always expensive. Depends. What is your standard for a good video? Are you measuring simple traffic? Are you measuring action taken, like opting in or sale? A good video is one that meets it’s objective. And that doesn’t necessarily mean a good video needs to be professionally produced, or expensive and lengthy to develop. We’ve managed solopreneur video campaigns and corporate, in as many cases, the inexpensive, home-made video performed best in comparison. The important thing in development is to consider your target, your objective and do what is best for your company.
What most consultants and gurus don’t tell you is that there is always one variable in online marketing that you can not control is the power of anomaly — what makes one thing successful, may not work for another. Cost does not always equate results.

Great article and comments Maria! It’s amazing how many experienced marketers don’t apply the basics. Most effective video campaigns out there have been well thought out, even when their designed to look like an accidental “Hit.”

I thought this post was about me from the title. Now that I see its not, I’m sad.
We’ve only just scratched the surface on the proper and most effective ways of using video.
Diminishing returns and over saturation of video content will continue to make marketers more efficient and creative with their use of video.
The days of simply throwing up a million “videos” of someone reading an article (yeah, they did that) are long gone as a traffic driver and ranking agent.
@Jack I agree completely, the “system” makes us all work harder
