This apparently is the big question many of us will be asking in the coming weeks. Twitter, of course, has a 2,000 following limit — which was initially imposed on newer accounts and now on everyone — yes, even me. What does this all mean? Some say Twitter follow limit is bad, some say it’s good to fight spam.
I say, it really, really, really irritates me that I can not reciprocate the relationship my followers have with me. But, I also think that social media “experts” and marketers of all kinds have been seriously abusing Twitter by mass following people in hopes they will get an automatic follow back — ultimately inflating their numbers.
I’ve seen it so many times it makes me wanna gag and I guarantee you’ve seen it too when checking profiles — blatant loading of followers:

For those of use who have never followed to be followed, but follow those who initiate a relationship with us, this sucks and I can’t really say it much nicer than that.
Some speculate, it’s the first move towards monetizing Twitter, by creating a limit of 2,000 — those accounts being free — then adding a premium option for those of us who want to follow over 2,000. Then again, how is that going to help with spam? Spammers will pay to spam, they do so all the time online.
My Suggestion to Twitter
Add options for people to mark tweets and twitter users as spam. Partner with third-party Twitter tools like TweetDeck and Seesmic so they can also add the same function. Let the users decide who is spamming and who is not.
Then, at least allow us to follow who follows us…
Those are my two cents, and for future reference, if you’ve followed me and I don’t follow you back, it’s out of my hands… Check me out on Facebook, where I’m not limited in my relationship with you!
