AlertThingy, a social media update desktop application, offers updates from major networks, news feeds. Services include social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and news feeds from WSJ and Business Week. You can even add unlimited RSS feeds to the mix. But, does AlertThingy actually contribute to increased productivity in social media? Here’s my review of the latest social media tool to hit the Net.
AlertThingy Says…
AlertThingy v3 brings the very latest updates from your favourite social networks direct to your desktop. Plus send Tweets, update your Facebook status, upload photos to Flickr, post to Tumblr and more. With v3 AlertThingy makes it faster and easier to manage the online you. Plus you get the coolest looking RSS reader on the interweb.
Sounds like a powerful tool, let’s look at the setup:
My Take on AlertThingy…
Great concept. Two thumbs way up for their vision in creating a desktop application that consolidates social and web updates. As we progress in social media and the social web, this type of productivity tool will become increasingly important.
Lacks serious productivity points from user perspective. For those of you looking for a tool that will not only keep you up to date, but allow you to easy participate across multiple sites/conversations — AlertThingy is not the tool. It’s wide “TweetDeck” like interface is great, but it’s usability for social media power users is not the best.
My recommendation? Stick with tools like TweetDeck, Ping.fm, and updates through RSS via Google Reader. You’ll get the same alerts (and more) and still be able to micro-manage and actively participate better on Twitter, FriendFeed and across the blogosphere.
Here’s my official two cents on AlertThingy:
