Online Marketing How-To

This post is an excerpt from the 30 Days 30 Ways program, joined by 1250 people (and growing) >>

After working with online businesses for over a decade, I’ve learned two things: online marketing success depends on your plan/activities AND must be scalable with your approach systematic/consistent.  Period.  The IMPACT Marketing Formula was born out of necessity and from the successes of over 300 clients across the world.  Today, it’s the driving force behind everything we do for ourselves and teach to others.

How and why the Formula works…

The IMPACT Marketing Formula is about understanding your audience, building relationships with them, IMPACTing them, and turning them into customers/clients. Its about understanding that whatever your niche, your online marketing efforts have to be integrated and intelligent.  Its also about being consistent, purposeful, and systematic in your approach to online marketing so you don’t waste time, money or effort — you do what works for your business, your audience, and your goals.

Understanding the IMPACT Marketing Formula

The Formula answers these questions, to help you create and execute the ultimate online marketing plan:

  • Who is my ideal audience and how can I get found by them?  (Target)
  • How do I become a part of their online community and build relationships with them?  (Engage)
  • What can I do to create IMPACT, setting me apart from my competition (IMPACT)
  • How do I turn my qualified audience into loyal, buying customers/clients (Convert)
  • How do I know what works and build on those successes, while leveraging new opportunities (Monitor, Rinse & Repeat)

What the Formula looks like in real-life…

How the Formula can really help you…

Scenario #1 — No more shiny object syndrome

Right now, I’m willing to bet most of you are following multiple gurus.  You’re implementing whatever they tell you, without consideration of your entire online marketing plan (if you even have one).  You’re buying blueprints and systems that promise results — after all, they seem to work for the guru right?  With the IMPACT Marketing Formula, you’ll be able to evaluate a tactic based on how it fits into your online marketing strategies.  Let me say that again, it’s big.

You’ll be able to evaluate guru tactics based on how each will fit into the online marketing strategies you know work for your business, audience, and goals.

In case you missed the importance of that, understand that tactics are the actual actions you’ll take, strategies are the plans that are based on intelligent marketing decisions.   Strategies should ALWAYS come before tactics.  The problem is, most gurus are selling you tactics.  If you know what works and what doesn’t and you have an overall plan, you’ll know what to try, how to measure success or failure and become more efficient.

Scenario #2 — No more famine or feast results

A sure sign that you’re not implementing smart online marketing is the fact that you will ALWAYS get “famine or feast” results.  Meaning, you’ll either do really well, because you’re in product launch mode or you’ll do really bad, because you haven’t built momentum or real relationships with your ideal audience.  You’ll never gain any traction.  Your indicator of success will always be based on how much money you transferred into your account today, never really planning for tomorrow.

With a solid plan, you’ll be consistent and strategic.  You won’t miss opportunities and you won’t waste your time on activities that are not working.  This is why we call it working smarter, not harder.

Scenario #3 — Reality no longer bites

As a result of not being consistent, not having a plan, only following the marketing tactics of so-called gurus — most people experience the “reality bites” syndrome.  You’ve believed the hype,  you don’t understand the sales process or the reality of time being a very important factor in marketing online.  You jump into social media, based on a gurus blueprint instructions, in January — and you’re bummed that you’ve sold little or nothing before the month ends.

With a solid plan, you’ll understand that reality doesn’t bite.  Time is your bottom line’s friend in the long run.  You’ll plan with realistic expectations and learn how to gain momentum and leverage opportunities you never realized existed.

Whether you prescribe to the IMPACT Marketing Formula, or another, the point is — you need strategy, execution, and measurement. You need a consistent means for planning your activities while monitoring your successes and failures.  By doing so, you’ll make smarter marketing decisions, leading to better results and less chaos in your online marketing activities.

  • I agree that there should be a global plan, following just from howto's is not effective. Besides what works for one may not work so well for the other
  • Hey Maria,

Interesting post, and I appreciate the image you done their.

With regards to Podcasts, do you promote your podcasts or mainly use them for back links?

I only ask because I have dabbled with them and done a blog post on one of my blogs, I used the free odigo service, have you heard of that? Any other good services out there?

    Cheers, great blog.
  • Hi, Maria. In order to get my foot in the water with another mode of communication, I would like to start podcasting. What are some of your suggestions in terms of recording equipment, etc. What are the nuts and bolts of starting a podcast, or resources you would recommend?
  • Podcasting is actually much easier than people think. First, you'll definitely need a good plugin like Podpress -- to podcast through your blog. Second a good mic and recording software. I use Garage Band on my Mac (comes with it). For PC, you can use Sound Forge or Audacity (the latter being free). The mic I use is the Blue Snowball, which is a great, reasonably priced studio type mic. :-) Hope this helps :-)
  • Thanks, Maria, you are the definite Diva! I will look into this.
