KGen Keyword Generator Plugin for FireFox… Get Your Research On!
April 28, 2008 · Online Business
… keyword generator, huh?! Yep, even solopreneurs need to be aware of the keywords related to searches in their area of expertise, which ones their competition is using, and what they should be using. Keywords, in fact, should be ingrained in your psyche as a solopreneur - used when you publish content, used when you post to your blog, used when you optimize your web presence - used in more places than just to do keyword research…. really.
Now, here’s one caveat - before we begin. Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, rely on one tool for any kind of online marketing research. Diversify the information you’re pulling in, before you make any major moves into a niche or changes to your own. Why? Because keyword research is much more than just scoping out what your competitor’s are doing. Remember, this is a beginner tool instruction and does not, in any way, imply the end all to keyword research
KGen Keyword Generator
KGen, according to it’s developers, is “an extension that allows you to see what keywords are strong on visited web page. Than, you can retrieve them for social sharing (tag filling) or webmastering/SEO.” Huh? Okay, let’s walk through it, because it’s possibilities can be good to open the mind of the busy solopreneur.
KGen is a great way to view the exact keywords and their respective weights (placement and density) on any web page you are viewing. Any page. By simply clicking “view –> sidebar –> kgen” you can get instant access to this valuable information.
Keywords on Page with Frequency and Weight –>

Every word that is set as a keyword in the Metadata is pulled and tallied. Of what use is this? Let me count the ways:
- Social Bookmarking (friendly or professional) can copy to the clipboard or in their favorite automated social bookmarking program (like OnlyWire or SocialMarker) and bookmark the entry with the actual keywords on the page. This is an excellent use for solopreneur’s who are dabbling in social bookmarking. And can actually speed up your work.
- For solopreneurs or online marketers that are starting their keyword research for a project, niche research, or whatever - can use KGen as a starting point in the brainstorming of keywords. Visit successful competitors and check them out, you’ll get a good list started. But, remember, keyword research goes far beyond this - KGen is just a small component to that whole area of online marketing.
- Also, for solopreneurs and even online niche marketers, KGen can help you compare your SEO results with that of your competitor, comparing keywords and weight can let you know some good information on the work left to do in your own campaign, based on the results you are achieving.
- KGen is also a great way to help you plan and direct your content. Yes, a portion of your content will always be consistent and some of it will come and go with trends, current online conversations and the like. But, smart solopreneurs know that some of your content should be very strategic in nature. Meaning, if you’re just flying by the seat of your pants or just regurgitating the same stuff - you’re missing a huge opportunity in building an authority site that draws your audience in. KGen can help you learn the key marketing strategies (if there even is one) from your competitors - watching what they produce and how they tag it, and even how they distribute it. Educated observation can sometimes be one of the best ways to “figure” things out and expand your strategies further.
Keywords Visual/Cloud View –>

If you’re a visual person like me, you’ll appreciate the “tag cloud” view of keywords and their respective weights. For those not familiar, the tag-cloud allows you to “see” a keyword’s importance or relevance in a quick snapshot. The larger the font or darker the color of a particular tag, the more weight or frequency it has. Just another view of the same information given previously.
KGen Options –>

KGen gives you the option of determining how and what will display for the keywords shown. You can sort by weight, repetition, word length, or name. This can be helpful depending on the research you’re doing.
You can also set filters that help keep the “junk” out, like setting the minimum word length, and special characters.
KGen Tags Preferences –>

Semi-important for the solopreneur, KGen will show you the tags used within the code, involving keyword placement. Seasoned SEO professionals might care, but for a solopreneur - this may not be a good indicator. If you’re attempting to optimize your web pages, you’ll take notice of where your competitors are inserting their keywords into the back-end coding of the page. One warning: KGen includes scripts such as javascript and others, so this may not be a true indicator of keyword placement.
KGen Attributes Preferences –>

The attributes list is the same concept as in the tags. Ultimately, this won’t be too relevant for newbies just starting out. But good information if you know what to do with it.
KGen Ignore Preferences –>

The ingore preference will be full, by the time you become a seasoned user. You’ll include words that just do not matter for your niche. KGen automatically ingores such grammatical words as “the” “and” and the like, but you’ll definitely be adding tons more in an effort to filter to the right information… as you learn what matters and what doesn’t in your keyword research.
If all you do is simply get a good idea of the keywords in your area, what your competitors are doing, and let that sink it… You’re likely blazing past most people. Even a basic understanding of keywords - how they work and what they are in a niche - is a good idea. Too many solopreneurs avoid it completely, missing simple opportunities to build a solid, optimized web presence over time. Yep, you’ll likely never get where you would if you could afford that SEO guru, but so many benefits come from just applying simple, non-technical steps into what you already do.
Just start to get familiar with keywords and see what kind of ideas you come up with. If you’re a professional, you already know this, so pitch in some ideas of how this simple, basic knowledge can help bloggers, solopreneurs, and other online marketers - yep, even the newbies… Sharing is caring
