I love the New Year, it’s the only time of year, I actually take a full-blown “unplugged” vacation. No Twitter, no blogging, no Internet connection whatsoever in the house. It helps me de-connect and gain perspective for planning the new year. It seems everywhere you go online, everyone’s making predictions for 2009 - what’s going to happen, who’s going to do what… This is my list of what is really going to matter in 2009.

Success in 2009 is going to require focus. Not that it’s ever been just about slamming yourself all across the Net, but even more so this year, you’re going to have to focus your efforts. Focus. You’re going to actually have to have a plan this year to rise above and get your message heard.

2009 is all about quality not quantity. Reaching the coveted 5k Facebook friends limit just doesn’t matter anymore. Nor will using Mr. Tweet and getting as many useless followers on Twitter. It’s not about how many people you “know” it’s about who you know and who they know. Get over the size factor and focus on strategically connecting.

2009 is about influence and impact. It’s more about deeper relationships than ever before. It’s about influencing others who influence others. And, it’s only going farther in that direction. Take a look at your activities and really understand your points of influence and contact. Make an impact this year.

2009 will require you to go back to the basics. 2008 happened in a flash, social media blew up and blogging grew up. This year, you’re going to have to stop chasing all the shiny bright objects online and get back to the basics. This year, make the resolution to not overlook the staples that have gotten you results, they still work.

Whatever your plans for 2009, this year take a step back and get focused for more influence and impact… and better results.

Please note: This list is based entirely on my opinion (an expert one at that)… My grandfather always told me to surround myself with the best of the best at all times, to become the best. These people help me raise my blogging game each and every week with innovative and insightful posts… and that’s all I have to say about that

Blogging Experts to Watch for 2009

By far the most influential blogger for me in 2008. I’ve watched and learned as Jack stuck with his own innovative style and giving his audience exactly what they want and need. He’s insightful, practical, and definite one to watch for 2009!

No list would be complete without Brian Clark and the awesome guest posts. Copywriting and blogging go hand in hand, and ANYONE will learn valuable blogging tips that will make a huge difference in your blogging for 2009.

The previous Blog Tune-Up Series post covered blog design and layout. Before that, we took it back to the basics in Wordpress covering plugins and necessary tweaks. This go-round we’re covering, email marketing for bloggers. Many consider them two polarized worlds. Millions of successful bloggers and business blog owners, consider them to be two parts in a whole, like peas and carrots. One without the other just isn’t cricky. Being a blogger of any sort does not negate the necessity for the tried and true basics of online marketing. Just because you have access to RSS and other groovy tools, doesn’t mean you drop everything else. The key is to create a strategic “blend” of both, for best results. Email marketing will have a place in blogging for some time, so let’s dive in and learn the best way to blend the best of both worlds.

It’s Not An Either, Or Proposition

To have a chance at major league success, we’re talking about playin’ with the big boys and girls — you absolutely need to leverage both RSS marketing and email marketing. If your game is really on point, you’ll be using both to effectively communicate and facilitate dialogue between you and your readers. If you’re still struggling to gain some type of return from your list (either RSS or email) — you need to pay attention to my next statement.

A subscriber, in any form, does not really mean a “marketing-recepticle,” which you fill with all your marketing trash.

Subscribers are subscribed to gain value (whether emotional, informational, etc) from you. Period. It doesn’t matter what you’re blogging about. It doesn’t matter what kind of blogger you are - small business owner, corporate CEO, internet marketer, or whatever. Your readers subscribe because they want something you have. What that something is, well, that’s an entirely different series of posts all together. That, you should have figured out way before you even build a blog.

Take note: Subscription is not permission to market, it’s permission to meet (better yet, exceed) your readers expectations of value.

You ever wonder why some hard-core internet marketers are always frantically building their list. Lists burn out when they are mismanaged. Garbage in garbage out. If all you do is market to your list, you’ll never experience the true value of email marketing. Good email marketing will strengthen the relationship you have with your readers. It will solidify your brand and help maintain a good reputation as a whole. You’ll also significantly increase your bottom line (all other factors being good), as a direct result of treating your readers like actual human beings who don’t like to have their time wasted and actually expect something of value in exchange for their contact information.

Create a Hybrid Email & RSS Communication Machine

Okay, a little dramatic, but you get the point. They work best together. Many think there are two kinds of people. The RSS, early adopting techies and the slow to catch up email subscribers. Not so. In client after client case review, we’ve seen a major gray area inbetween the two. People who want convenience and value, wrapped up into a timely and relevent package - delivered how they want it delivered.

Use the Right Email and RSS Marketing Tools

The best option is to use an email/list service that integrates RSS and social media features with the standard email marketing features. At the solopreneur, small business level that might look like our top pick, AWeber. For corporate that might require including the technical capabilities to blend the two together on a larger scale. Whatever you have to do, make sure you have the capabilities.

AWeber allows you to publish your RSS feed to any lists, at any scheduled time, in any format you wish. You can customize the subject line, what the feed looks like in email, and even how many posts show in the update.

Aweber can publish your newsletter archive to an RSS or XML feed and Twitter. In both cases, it automatically creates an online version of your broadcast, text or HTML version. Each online version is then accessible via the online archive that is automatically updated. In our case, we can track significant subscription spurts that happen at the time of publishing, because an online version is tweeted to the 5k+ list of followers we currently have (and growing by about 50-100 a day). Some days, ten’s of people will tweet a thank you for the tips provided in the email with the link, many will retweet it.

Aweber has a ton of other features. You can customize your readers entire experience, from opting in to your list to how and when they receive contact from you. Here’s some other helpful hints in using Aweber and email marketing as a blogger:

Be sure to use a reply email that actually gets checked. The days are over where you can simply blast out an email and receive no communication from your readers. People expect to be heard today and they provide feedback. When setting your reply emails, make sure it’s an email that actually gets returned. The feedback from your readers will become invaluable in planning your email marketing - especially for business.

Be sure to create and customize a page specifically for those who are already subscribed to your list. It happens more than you think. Through tracking, we’ve seen a significant number of people landing on and directed from our custom “Your Already Subscribed” page. Provide support and an alternative action on that page. Our page looks like this:

In Aweber, this is as simple as setting the redirect page URL. It’s too simple to skip over and it’s the little opportunities that most are missing. See below:

What Email & RSS Working Together Might Look Like

For every business it might be different. How you set it up should depend entirely on your objectives. After building over 300 blogs this year, here’s a few examples to highlight what it might look like to use email and RSS marketing together.

We’ve built niche and affiliate blogs that only require content on an RSS feed to be fed either by RSS or email. Post to the blog and people get the post either via RSS or email. The end. This serves the purpose of traffic, any and all traffic is good. We like to use FeedBurner. Since Google’s taken it over, there were early issues in the switch over, but since then it’s been all smooth sailing. Feedburner works great with the FeedBurner Feedsmith Plugin (for Wordpress.org blogs). Feedburner Feedsmith will then route all feed connections into one easy-to-track place.

Alternatively, there is also the FD Feedburner Plugin and the FeedBurner Widget.

We’ve built professionals’ and small business blogs that required FeedBurner for RSS management and AWeber for professional newsletter delivery. Timing of the blog updates should always be coordinated with timing and delivery of your newsletter. What kind of content you deliver in each will depend on many factors.

If your objectives determine you’ll make contact with your readers twice a week, say Tuesday and Thursday, you’d like time deliver of the newsletter on one and the blog update in a similar format on the other day.

If you’re a professional who likes to micro-manage your list, or make frequent regular content on a daily basis, you’ll likely offer both forms of subscription (email and RSS) but simply blog to feed posts as they are done, to both sets of subscribers. Basically, just pushing your blog content out.

If your focus is to build your email list to deliver branded email marketing campaigns, you’d likely offer an insanely valuable incentive for email subscriptions and note that email subscribers receive blog updates and your email newsletter. In this case, you might set-up a day during the week, on a regular basis where your email subscribers get a list of the most recent 3 posts as a blog update. You might also still post newsletter content on the blog by changing it to a “post” format.

You might want to offer exclusive content to only email subscribers, then simply feed your blog updates on a schedule to them. In the meantime, you’re RSS subscribers receive their blog updates with suggestions to subscribe via email for the exclusive content.

Each of these examples served a specific objective for the business that employed it. The point is, don’t think that there is a cookie-cutter way to tie email marketing to your RSS or blog marketing efforts. There isn’t. Any expert who says otherwise should seriously re-evaluate that decision.

Email Marketing Do’s and Don’ts

The most important thing to remember about list building and email marketing: Today, SPAM includes anything received that is either not recognized or not wanted at the moment of delivery.

Here are some quick do’s and don’ts related to the reality of SPAM today:

Don’t import any list you did not build yourself. Direct marketers love to buy lists and then market, market, market. You’ll achieve greater success by building your list honestly and ethically by only importing lists you’ve actually built yourself.

Don’t swindle for contact then auto-subscribe. In other words, don’t add anyone to the list that isn’t absolutely clear they are being added to a list. Transparency and honesty are very important at all levels for email marketing to be successful.

Always get specific permission for marketing. Don’t put up an insanely valuable offer, disclose you’ll never market to them and the download is absolutely no strings attached, then send out a series of 60 auto-responders as soon as they optin.

Don’t ask for too much information up front. You never want to qualify your potential subscriber right out of the gate. If you’re marketing is set up correctly your system will qualify prospects at later phases. Statistically, across the board, you’ll experience lower optin rates relative to how much information you ask for.

Don’t focus on just getting them on your list, focus on keeping them on the list. In other words, keep the value train rolling at all times. Don’t assume subscription means, “shove your marketing pitch down my throat.”

Do make sure you’re quick and to the point. More today than at any other time in marketing, you need to be quick and efficient in broadcasting any message to your audience. Email is no different. Get to the point.

One message, focus on one topic. Similar to above. One topic, one message per email. When developing my emails, I always remember one thing - what can I teach today, and does this email provide one action for my readers to take?

Provide a backdrop or summary when referring your readers somewhere other than where they are familiar. Don’t send a link with a scarcity line saying, “You’ve just got to check this out or the world is ending…” Get a grip. Respect your audience, let them know where you’re sending them first.

Keep your frequency consistent. Don’t blast out more because you’re experiencing a fall in sales or trying to capitalize on a lucrative offer. Be thoughtful in your timing of delivery and consistent.

Meet your subscriber expectations at all times. However you begun your relationship with your email readers, keep it that way. If you promised no marketing, don’t market. If you promised monthly updates, keep it at monthly updates. Don’t change your focus, frequency, or any other factor once you’ve declared it before optin.

Keep consistent branding and “quick hints” that declare contact from your company. Brand, brand, brand in everything you do. Email is no different. Keep a consistent “sender” name and “sender” email. Our team uses Subject line “quick hints” that this is an email from the Web Success Diva by always placing [WSD] at the beginning of every subject line. (Example: [WSD] Holiday Marketing Tips for Every Company) People scroll their emails and offers, make it easy for them to spot you with consistent sender information.

If you use images in your email, use ALT text for programs that do not show images and for mobile readers. It’s always best to send text and HTML, but most programs default to HTML when it’s available. The problem is Outlook and most mobile users don’t show your images. If you’ve got a image at the top of your email marketing a specific offer, they are missing it. Place that offer in the ALT tag of the image or a text caption for the image.

Email Marketing Tracking and Testing

You need to know how you’re doing in your efforts. To know this, you need to understand your objectives, what results you’re seeking, and how to measure your results.

Pay Attention to Unsubscribes

Most people focus on how many are on their list and how many they bring into their list on a daily, maybe hourly basis. You also need to focus on unsubscribes with equal diligence. You can gain a ton of information that can improve your email marketing by understanding when and why people are unsubscribing.

Now that’s not to say, pay attention to every single unsubscribe. That means paying attention to patterns of behavior or groups of unsubscribes. These numbers look like this…

AWeber offers lead growth stats that can be broken down by day, week, or month. Watch your unsubscribes for specific campaigns and more. A huge red flag would be a large number of unsubscribes from one campaign or a campaign timeframe. Here’s an example from a very niche list we’ve been building since Dec. 1st.

Aweber allows you to set-up specific categories for your lists, enabling unsubscribe tracking by specific campaign or other determinants. This is a great tool if you’re testing strategies and content or deploying a marketing campaign.

Pay Attention to Complaints

Most email providers require unsubscribe information in every email sent, it’s the law. There are still those people who will click or file your email as SPAM, even though they’ve opted in. You need to pay attention to this number as a whole. Too many complaints will lower your deliverability rate, as well as get you singled out through your provider.

Hint: I see email marketers creating a large space between the bottom of the message and the unsubscribe information in the footer of the message, to deliberately deter unsubscribes by making people have to scroll forever to find it. Don’t. You’re only taking a chance at increasing your complaints.

Another Hint: At the top of every email, place a friendly reminder that your reader subscribed and subscription management is available at the bottom of each and every email sent. We place this message:

*** You are receiving this email because you subscribed to the Web Success Diva network. You can manage your subscription at the bottom of this and every email received. ***

Aweber let’s you monitor your complaints per email:

Pay Attention to Sign-Up Conversions

Depending on the email marketing program you use, this information will likely need to be tracked using tools like Google Analytics (Goals). Goal and funnel tracking are one of the best ways to determine if you’re meeting your business objectives. A goal would be the ending step to a process you’re attempting to take your audience through. For example, final thank you pages upon opting in or a download page after purchase.

You’re basically tracking the conversion of people who made it from one point, through others, to an end point in a specific “funnel” (for lack of a better word). We use goal tracking to track our conversions for sign-up on specific offers and campaigns.

For more advanced marketing tracking, Google’s Analytics goals let you track the monetary value of each goal. For example. You created a special campaign for an info product launch, you’ll set up the goals for each different type of marketing campaign used and be able to track the value of money generated from that specific campaign.

Test, Test, and Test Again

Testing is one of the most important tools in marketing, any marketing. Testing allows you to learn what works, what works best, and what doesn’t work. It’s absolutely necessary if you’re serious about your business success.

Aweber allows you to easily split-test every broadcast you send out. Split testing enables you to track one change made, and it’s impact on what you’re hoping for. For example, how will my open rates be affected by a different subject line. How will my sales be impacted by a different buy now set-up.

You can test up to 4 different groups or variables. Each group or variable is given a percentage weight, like 25%, 25%, 25%, 25% (or whatever you choose) with delivery of each group being based on the percentage:

Hint: For email marketing, split your tests by 50% and test one item at a time, like subject line. This allows you to simply test a single variable at a time.

Another hint: The larger your list size, the more confidence you can have in your results. If you’re running a small list, don’t place total weight in your results, until other statistics can confirm your results as well.

Things to Think About in Tracking and Testing

Here’s a small list of the many things you should think about in your email marketing (there are many more dependent on you business and objectives)…

What types of subject lines helped to increase open rates on emails delivered?

Which seem to work better, short or long emails?

Do HTML or text emails have a better click-through rate?

Which blog posts and topics drew in the most subscriber sign-ups?

Which kind of offers brough in the most subscriber sign-ups?

What kind of links and words used brought in the most click-throughs?

Which words, phrases, or activities seemed to bring in more SPAM complaints?

The list could go on and on…

Monitor and Record Your Email Marketing Results

Internet marketers call it an Email Swipe File. I call it my little email black book, it’s a compilation of all your email marketing efforts - including copy, stats, and results. The value of this is immeasurable. You’ll determine the “Definite Don’ts” based on specific results you’ve tracked. You’ll also generate a “Best Practices” list and a great list of what’s worked and what hasn’t for specific campaigns. These become your guidelines for future email marketing.

Word of Caution: Many marketers will coin the phrase “email swipe copy” when providing you with promotional copy. The assumption is the copy is tested, tried, and true for best results. Don’t make any assumptions for your list. Stick to your list best practices at all times. How you communicate, at all levels, is between you and your list, not what someone else says supposedly worked for their list.

Review your email marketing efforts frequently and definitely for each campaign you are running…

Final Thoughts on Email Marketing

Email marketing, like any other form of marketing, takes time and effort. The most important rule of thumb is to respect your readers subscription expectations. ALWAYS exceed their expectations, you’ll enjoy higher than average open rates, click through rates, and super low unsubscribe rates. The long-term profitability of your list will also grow. And, dont’ forget to track and test, track and test, track and test!

We’ve had quite a few readers ask questions about shortened URLs and “pretty” URLs — how to do them, what are your options, which option is best. So we’ve put together this quick tip guide to help you learn how to do what’s available, as well as learn which options are best for your needs. So let’s dive right into the world of shortened and pretty URLs…

What Are Shortened and Pretty URLs

I’m aware that a ton of newbies read this blog, so we’re going to start from the very beginning :-) Shortened and pretty URLs are “better” versions of an original URL. They are just what they sound like:

Shortened URLs

Is a long URL that has been shortened and set-up as a redirect to the longer URL. For example, using a URL shortening service will:

Take this: http://websuccessdiva.com/shortened-pretty-url-guide/

And turn it into this: http://twurl.nl/2ub6p0

They both go to the same place, one is just shorter than the other. The point is simply to shorten the URL

Benefits of Shortened URLs

When using the right shortened URL service, you’ll be able to track the click-throughs on each link. Tracking is always a plus with marketing, because it helps you make better decisions in the future based on how many or how little people click through.

Pretty URLs

Is a shorter, prettier version of a longer URL. For example, creating a pretty URL will:

Take this: http://websuccessdiva.com/shortened-pretty-url-guide/

And turn it into this: http://websuccessdiva.com/urls/

Like the shortening of URLs, they both go to the same place, one is just prettier than the other.

Benefits of Pretty URLs

When you create pretty URLs you’re basically just making it easier for people to remember or type the URL directly. When you use your main domain, you’re also branding your domain. Technically, if you make the pretty URL short enough, you’re actually shortening the URL too.

Choosing Between a Shortened and Pretty URL

First, let me say, we’re not referring to how to pretty up your form or database driven site URLs. That simply goes beyond the scope of this post and requires much more technical information based on your software platform, etc. We’re referring to the manual process of shortening links, including affiliate links, links you share via email marketing, links you share on a teleconference call, etc.

What’s the big diff right?

Shortened URLs tend to be done automatically by services. Pretty URLs can be achieved by both manually creating them or using a free or paid service that shortens and makes them pretty.

Which do I use?

Your options are wide open. Here’s what we recommend:

If you’re posting affiliate links or links that are actually clicked online, without people having to remember them and type them in, shortened and pretty will work — your preference is the version that provides tracking!

If you’re using URLs that must be typed in by memory, like those given on a teleconference call, then you’ll definitely want to use pretty URls — your preference is the version that is trackable, but in most cases there are other ways to track through Google Analytics too.

You’re preference is always to use any URL that allows for some form of tracking. Everything you do in marketing should be trackable in some shape or form. You’ll never know how to market for your company and your audience without it.

How We Use Shortened and Pretty URLs

We use shortened URLs for all our social media updates through Ping.FM and on Twitter. We currently love and use the free service TweetBurner.com. After removing the setting for automatica shortening in Ping.FM, every time we post a link on our social media updates, it’s a TweetBurner link. Why? Because people click it right there and it doesn’t have to be pretty — but we like to see the click tracking provided.

We use pretty URLs for all of our teleconference calls, links within emails, and links that could be shared verbally (like offline marketing materials). We manually create these links so that they are always linke to our domain — for branding purposes (especially important when doing teleconference calls or offline marketing). This limits our ability to track the URL click-throughs, however, we’ve devised other ways to do so through breaking down our Google Analytics. It’s a judgment call we’ve made based on our priorities in marketing.

In rare instances, we’ll pay for a shortening service that also creates pretty URLs and provides tracking. We’re all about low-cost or free services (because that’s what we teach our audience), but in some cases like during a very important campaign, we’ll use a paid service that allows for all three benefits. This is rare, because our niche is teaching low-cost alternatives — so we practice what we preach.

We use pretty URLs for all links heading into our social media profiles, like Twitter and Facebook, when shared in email. It brands our domain and allows for easy typing in later. These URLs look like this: http://websuccessdiva.com/fbfan/ or http://websuccessdiva.com/twitter/

Shortened and Pretty URL Options

What you want to use will depend on how you feel about shortened with tracking versus pretty with branding. It’s a business decision that only you can make, and should be directed by your objectives and nothing else :-) Let’s take a look at manual pretty URLs and after that, services that shorten and pretty-fy your URLs.

Manually Creating Pretty URLs

One of the easiest and cheapest ways to create pretty URLs is to just do them yourself. It’s easy, if you know how and where to upload files to your site or blog. The key premise to remember, is you’re just creating a URL that automatically re-directs to another page, after someone clicks on it.

You’ll need to have access to your site or blog’s FTP, for the ability to upload files. If you’re not sure how to do this, it’s easy to learn — but there are alternatives, including paid services that will create them for you. You can download our favorite free FTP client, CoreFTP here.

You’ll need your FTP login information, which typically looks like this:

Server name: ftp.domainname.com

Username: given by hosting, like “websuccessdiva”

Password: given by hosting, like “snoopy123″

You’ll need to use a text editor like the one that comes with Windows, NotePad under “Accessories” in your start menu. This will allow you to edit a simple HTML file, save it, then upload it into a folder on your website or blog.

Step 1: Set-up a folder on your Desktop

Set up a folder on your desktop, named whatever you’ll remember, that will hold all the shortened/pretty URL folders you’ll create. This just makes it easier for you to access and manage. I called my URLS:

Step 2: Download and Save the necessary HTML file.

You’ll need a copy of a redirecting HTML file, to add your links to for creating your pretty URLs. You can download the HTML file here. Always keep the title/name of the page as “index.html” — you’ll understand why in a bit. (Be sure to right-click it and “Save As” into the folder you just created on your desktop. Name it index.html)

Step 3: Open your file in NotePad, a text editor, or an HTML editor.

You can use NotePad (which comes with any Windows computer), any other text editor you have on your computer, or a free HTML editor like HTML-Kit (we use). You’ll simply open the index.html file you previously downloaded and saved in whatever tool you prefer.

Step 3: Open the HTML file in NotePad (or other text and/or html editor).

Note: If you’re using NotePad or other TEXT editor, you’ll need to set the “file type” to all, so it shows the HTML files and not just .txt files.

Here’s how the file looks in NotePad:

Here’s what it looks like in an HTML editor:

You can download a free HTML editor here.

Step 4: Using the HTM editor, create your re-directed code.

You’ll need to edit two things in the HTML file to create your re-directing URL:

* Change the Title tag to represent what it is you’re sending people to.
* Change the link to the actual link you want people to go to.

It looks like this in the code on the HTML editor:

We changed Web Success Diva Social Internet Marketing to…

Shortened and Pretty URL Guide from Web Success Diva

and URL=LINK YOU WANT REDIRECT TO GOES HERE to…

URL=http://websuccessdiva.com/shortened-pretty-url-guide/

Note the spacing when adding the link, there is none.

What we did…

We changed the title that will show on the users browser bar and we added the link we want the clicker to go to.

Here’s what the change looks like in NotePad:

Step 5: Save the index.html file in your desktop folder, within a subfolder to create the pretty link.

You create your pretty link by naming your subfolder what you want the pretty link to say. Examples:

* Naming your subfolder urls creates the pretty link
http://websuccessdiva.com/urls/
* Naming your subfolder prettylinks creates the pretty link
http://websuccessdiva.com/prettylinks/
* Naming your subfolder websuccessdiva creates the pretty link
http://websuccessdiva.com/websuccessdiva/

You get the picture… Why does this work? Because when you upload it (which we’ll show you next) you’re creating a folder with an index.html file in it. Web browsers will automatically default by sending people to whatever is in that index.html file - when your link is typed as a folder. Don’t get it? Don’t worry, just know it works, across all browsers
In other words…

http://websuccessdiva.com/urls/ tells the web browser to automatically go to:
http://websuccessdiva.com/urls/index.html

http://websuccessdiva.com/prettylinks/ tells the web browser to automatically go to:
http://websuccessdiva.com/prettylinks/index.html

http://websuccessdiva.com/websuccessdiva/ tells the web browser to automatically go to: http://websuccessdiva.com/websuccessdiva/index.html

And the index.html file tells the web browser to go to the link you added into it…

Next, save your index.html with the new changes into a subfolder with the name of the pretty URL you are creating.

Keep it short, no caps (the URLs are case-sensitive) and all one word. Make it applicable to what you’re sending people to, for ease in remembering when typing in. We rarely use numbers or anything that isn’t “words” based. On my computer, we saved the changed index.html file into a subfolder titled “prettyurls”:

Step 6: Upload the folder, with the new index.html file inside of it — to your the domain you’re creating the pretty folder for.

This step can be tricky for some, depending on how your hosting is set-up. It may look something like the below examples.

If you’re domain is the main one on your hosting, and not a subfolder or additional domain on your hosting, you’ll upload the folder to your root directory. Take a look:

Folders are automatically listed alphabetically, you can see above, there is not a public folder on my WebSuccessDiva domain.

You can see the folders I’m using for pretty URLs above too,

like “pingfm” and “shinein09″

For domains that have a public folder like “public_html” or “html_publich”, your FTP looks like this:

You need to upload the entire subfolder (in my case named “prettyurls”) to your main domain (it will automatically transfer the index.html file within the subfolder). I uploaded the folder I created above titled “prettyurls” with my new index.html file inside of it…

Inside the subfolder I uploaded to my main domain, you can see the index.html file we changed:

If you have a “public_html” or “html_public” folder on your domain, open it and that is now your main domain folder, upload your entire subfolder in there. (What that folder looks like in FTP below):

As you see below, the changed index.html file is included in my new subfolder “prettyurls”:

If your the domain you want to use is in a subfolder or is a secondary domain on your hosting account, it would look like this when it’s uploaded:

Wherever your main domain is, when your new subfolder is uploaded correctly, your pretty URL will point people to the link inside your index.html file…

http://websuccessdiva.com/prettyurls/

takes you to…

http://websuccessdiva.com/shortened-pretty-url-guide/

click the link and see

Special Case: TwitPwr http://www.twitpwr.com

We have NOT had a chance to use this service. However, it’s a new service by Joel Comm and it appears to be good on one side and not-so-good on the other. Here’s how the service looks when it shortens your links:

However, when people click the link, they get a framed header above the site you are sending them to, that looks like this…

The link to your Twitter username doesn’t take you to your Twitter profile, it creates a page like this:

Only after they click the “Follow Me on Twitter” does it foward to your actual Twitter profile. It does not automatically connect them with you on Twitter. If they land on your Twitter profile, and they are not cookied as logged in, they have to login and ONLY then can they actually follow you — like this…

Here’s my immediate thoughts on this:

First, everyone in IM knows, the more clicks the less likely your peeps will follow through on intended actions.

Second, most people who see a framed header, because of the bad rep they have, might be immediately turned off and suspicious of anything your promoting.

Third, isn’t it set-up to promote more so the service of TwitPwr with the link on the right side of that header, than it is to leverage the power of increasing your Twitter users? I mean, if so, that’s a brilliant idea, but not necessarily good for the person sharing the link.

Here’s what the service says:

Is it really the number of followers you have, or is the ability to get your followers to Take Action?

When you use the TwitPwr short url service, we track the number of clicks that you drive via the Twitter API, and give your account a Power Rating.

Your Power Rating is not only the unique traffic that you generate, but it’s also based on how many Twitter users you refer to our service.

Those referrals you generate will also play apart in driving even more traffic to your site.. Stay Tuned!

Here’s what I have to say:

It might be too early, given they are still in development (as noted with their copy on the “About” page above). However, I totally agree it’s about how much action your followers take. Tracking is based on how many clicks you get AND how many users you refer to the service. However, why wouldn’t it really include how many people actually follow you after seeing what you’re offering — isn’t that more powerful?

Here’s my thinking, if you’re VALUABLE, if your links are “liked” or perceived as valuable, wouldn’t someone follow you as a result of it? They should, or at least have a higher propensity to follow you. I would like to see some tracking on the link above the header frame, and a secondary tracking on the follow link on TwitPwr’s profile page. This would give you a greater indication of “action taken” and true power of influence on your Twitter followers.

It sounds like, the more clicks you get and the mo
