Facebook Posted Items – Sharing Beyond Your Network

by Maria Reyes-McDavis

An often missed opportunity on Facebook — its Posted Items (now Links) application. As Facebook tweaks this useful application, it becomes more prominent and increasingly has the ability to be more viral within the site and amongst connections. When sharing resources online, the new Facebook links is a good place to start, given it’s audience.

Recent Posted Item Changes

Back a few months, when Facebook launched its much hated new profile, Posted Items gained a feature spot on profiles that included the application…

Facebook Posted Items Now LinksAnd recently, Facebook has added new features to Posted Items that make it much easier for your shared resources to go viral within the site itself. But, in its usual style, Facebook is rolling it out over time, so everyone doesn’t have access to the new features — but they include:

  • A pop-up style lay over when sharing your or other people’s Posted Items — meaning you no longer have to go back and forth to share or comment on a Posted Item,
  • There’s also a new hover bar that hangs over the item your viewing — with links to comments for the Posted Items and to easily share that same item with others on Facebook.

What’s the Big Deal?

You’ve seen these types of features on sites like StumbleUpon and such, yes. But, remember, Facebook is a closed network and has not been the easiest site to achieve viral status — by its very setup. Facebook is making concerted efforts to change that fact. They started with video changes and other changes are expected to.

What this means to you is more opportunity to reach a true viral status — outside of just the connections you have — much more like the web itself. I’m now including Posted Items in my “system” of sharing content online. So, while I’m social bookmarking, I’m also posting the link to Facebook — and getting a pretty good return on traffic too.

Chances are, if you had a profile before the major changes Facebook make to its profile layout — you’ve already got the Posted Items application on your profile. If not…

First, install the “Posted Items” application. After logging in, from your main dashboard page (immediately after login), search for “Posted Items” in the upper-right search box.

Once installed, go to “Profile” on your top navigation bar. You’ll now see the “Links” box on your profile. You can edit preferences and move it around, just like you would any other part of your profile.

Sharing Posted Items

There are several ways you can share an item through your Posted Items box.

Click “See all” or “Add New” to open the Posted Items page, from the box itself to go to the application’s page. You’ll not only be able to share a link, you’ll also see all your and your connections’ Posted Items.

You can also share links directly from your profile. Simply click “Post a Link” to easily post an item.
