DIY: Uploading Themes Plugins Media in Wordpress

by Maria Reyes-McDavis

In order to build or manage your Wordpress blog, you will need to know how to add media/files to your server. You have many options available to you, including some by necessity.  Standard media files, such as images, plugins, themes, and videos can be uploaded directly through Wordpress — making it a truly DIY platform for your blog.  However, if your file sizes are ever larger than 24mb you will need to learn a secondary means for uploading files to your server — whether through FTP or your hosting FTP client (if any is offered).

DIY Necessity:  Uploading Files

You can not be a smart DIY marketer and not know how to upload files to your server, whether you’re using a Wordpress blog or not. Taking the time to learn this simple tactic will enable you to take total control of your own domain and entire web presence.  Most video files will be much larger than 24mb, there may be times when you need to not embed them using video sites like YouTube.  And, it’s just a skill you need to know, if you’re serious about online marketing :-)

Uploading Files Through Wordpress

Any file that you’ll need in Wordpress (themes, plugins, videos, images, and audios) can be uploaded inside your Wordpress blog. The file size limit for any file is 24mb.

  2. Click Add New Themes
  3. Click Upload
  4. Click Browse and locate the .zip file of your theme on your computer
  5. Double-click the file
  6. Click upload

You can also upload themes from the Wordpress repository of available themes (free):

Instead of uploading you can click Search, Featured, Newest, and/or Recently Updated to find the perfect theme for your blog.

  5. Click upload

You can also upload plugins from the Wordpress repository of available plugins (free):

How to Add Media (Video, Images, Audio) to Wordpress

  1. Login and click Media in your left-side navigation menu
  2. Click Add New
  3. Click Select File and locate the file on your computer
  4. Double-click the file
  5. Click upload

Remember:  Your file upload limit, per file, is 24mb

You can also add individual media files when creating a post or a page:

From within a post or page, you can simply click the image, video, or audio icon (top left menu in the editor) and upload a file specifically for that post/page.

Beyond uploading files from withing Wordpress (remember 24mb limit), an alternative would be to use an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program that givers you direct access to your server.

Stay Smart!

Hi Thanks for the advice just found your site from a search. I work with off line clients mainly so getting them confident in doing just one or two things like uploading an image is important. It just gives them so much more leverage. Your post was a great reminder to not assume anything!!

Cheers
