DIY: How to Install Self-Hosted Wordpress

by Maria Reyes-McDavis

Objective: How to Install a Self-Hosted Wordpress Blog

Description: Detailed video tutorials on how to install a self-hosted Wordpress blog using GoDaddy’s Application Installer, CPanel and Fantastico, or using the world famous 5 Minute Wordpress install guide.

Prerequisites: Wordpress is an open-source blogging platform that requires Linux hosting.  Your hosting should also meet reliability, scalability and speed minimums as well.

For many years, WebSuccessDiva and team has used GoDaddy as our hosting provider.  Recently we’ve started to advocate GoDaddy’s Grid Hosting, which provides affordable reliability, scalability (it grows with your site and traffic) and speed.  (We are NOT affiliates, we love the product and service) Another reputable hosting company, we have not used but have heard good things about is HostGator.  In the end, hosting should really be a matter of cost and customer service.  When something goes wrong, you need to know your hosting company is there to help.

We’re also assuming at this point, that your domain has been setup on your hosting account and you’re ready to go.  If not, go ahead and call your hosting company, get that done and come back :-)

Let’s get started…

The GoDaddy Application Install

If you’re a GoDaddy customer, you already know how easy it is to be the master of your domain using their many value-added services. GoDaddy has mastered the art of making your online life easy on the technical side, while still allowing you to build like the pros.  Here’s a quick video, showing you just how easy it is to install Wordpress on your GoDaddy hosting account!

  13. You’re ready to rock!

The CPanel and Fantastico Setup

Before I create a resource, I always look to see if one of my colleagues has done it better. Sure enough and not surprising, Ask Mr. Video (one of my favorite video gurus) has a great video on YouTube, walking you through a Wordpress installation using CPanel and Fantastico.  If you’re hosting with BlueHost or HostGator, you’ll likely need these instructions.  Yes, it is just as easy as with GoDaddy.

The Wordpress 5-Minute Manual Installation

Rarely will you have to do a manual install. You may have a dedicated server or prefer to do everything manually (lame).  In that case, Wordpress is still fairly easy to install.  You’ll need access to your hosting through FTP and be able to manually create a database through CPanel or some other hosting management control center.  Once you’ve done that, Wordpress has a great, quick guide to getting it done.  Wordpress 5-Minute Installation Guide

Note:  We will be adding a step-by-step video of the 5 Minute Installation, as well as videos for FTPing and Creating/Managing hosting databases… patience is a virtue friend.
