BackType The Twitter for Comments AND a Potential Valuable Resource
August 27, 2008 · Print This Article · Comments
Tech Crunch featured a great post on the new startup, BackType.Com, founded by Christopher Golda and Michael Montano. Calling it the Twitter for Comments — we went ahead and checked it out. According to the site itself, BackType is:
BackType is a service that lets you find, follow and share comments from across the web. Whenever you write a comment with a link to your website, BackType attributes it to you. We give comment authors a profile featuring all the comments they’ve written on the Internet. If you don’t have a website to use when you fill out comment forms, sign up and use one of ours.
If you really think through this, there just might be some very valuable use for BackType. A comment aggregator by user has potential… serious potential.
You can search for specific people and subscribe to their comments (think Me, Jack Humphrey, Ron Capps), you can also search for specific topics (think social media marketing, blog marketing, and even topics like Barack Obama).
Now, I know what you’re thinking, it’s not another addition to the comment issue. I completely agree with Tech Crunch on this one, it’s not just another addition — it is completely different. BackType aggregates all the users’ comments from the website URL they use when posting comments:
This means, every comment you post — under the URLs you consistently comment under — will be aggregated in one location.
The Potential?
- The media, journalists, bloggers, and others doing research could easily find out what a bunch of people are saying about a particular topic.
- Online entrepreneurs could “follow” their favorite expert and find out what they are reading and saying about industry developments and more.
- If it did go mainstream to media and the masses, it has the potential for another place online for strategic activities to occur. Not just comment for backlinks and traffic, but for visibility and exposure to a larger group that might not come directly from your blog.

This is a much needed resource. So much amazing content gets lost in the comments and I agree with TC that this is just not the same. I intend to start using this on my work project - http://overlay.tv - as soon as we get to comments.

Hi Maria,
So is this like the service called co.mments where you can record comments you leave on blogs and have others follow you at the main site?

@Mark
I love a smarty pants
Yeppers, but much better in my opinion. Search is cleaner, with more options to pinpoint exactly what you’re looking for — and this one has a similar Twitter interface, which I find much easier to use. Thanks!

Sorry Maria - expect more of the riff raff from my site to stumble over here. Most of them are harmless, but they will eat up some bandwidth getting into all your pages.

@Jack your riff raff is better than any other traffic I know
Bunch of sharp guys (and gals) so they can eat all the bandwidth they need
