Are there any real uses for Twitter Grader from HubSpot?
September 2, 2008 · Print This Article · Comments
After my initial look, I believe there just might be. Twitter.Grader.com is next in line at HubSpot’s Grader.com — they self-proclaim as, “a family of tools that helps measuer all that matters in modern marketing.” But does it really match up to that claim? Let’s take a look at the newest Twitter-fanatic tool to come on the Twitter scene.
What is Twitter.Grader.com?
Twitter.Grader.com is the newest addition to Grader.com’s list of “modern marketing measuring” tools. The others include:
Website Grader is a free seo tool that measures the marketing effectiveness of a website. It provides a score that incorporates things like website traffic, SEO, social popularity and other technical factors. It also provides some basic advice on how the website can be improved from a marketing perspective.
HubSpot’s Press Release Grader evaluates your press release and provides a marketing effectiveness score. This score is based upon basic factors from public relations experts including the language and content of the release, plus advanced factors from Internet marketing experts such as links and search engine optimization characteristics.
How does Twitter.Grader.com work?
Twitter Grader reports:
“Your grade is calculated using a combination of factors including:
The number of followers you have The power of this network of followers The pace of your updates The completeness of your profile …a few others”
As Jennifer Leggio reports on ZDNet, TwitterGrader measures engagement, not simply popularity like TweeterBoard does. Also keep in mind, it ONLY measures against people who have already been graded.
So, what’s my point?
Whether or not TwitterGrader’s criteria and algorithm actually produce accurate results — that’s an entirely different blog post. But, if the attempt made by HubSpot even comes close, does TwitterGrader have potential in the actual application of use. Should and do the numbers actually mean anything? That’s the real question.
Well, let’s think about the possible uses of measuring the “value” or influence of a specific Twitter profile.
Hmmmm… let’s brainstorm:
- Measuring the influence/engagement of your favorite expert… possible good information.
- Measuring the influence/engagement of possible social media “hires”… possibly great information.
- Checking your score against your competitors… possibly fun information.
- Checking out the top users according to the rankings… whatever.
Hmmmm…
Well, let’s read what Jennifer reported HubSpot said about the launch of TwitterGrader:
“We launched it because we have found that building interesting tools like this is a more effective marketing tool than doing advertising. Things like this get people curious and draw them in,” he said. “We think that the site will build a lot of traffic quickly and cheaply, and we can promote other products and services there to generate leads and sales. This is similar to what we have done with Website Grader and Press Release Grader.”
That’s just smart marketing and lead generation.
Listen, it’s a groovy, fun tool. I’ll give you that. Check your ranking out, compare it with others… and get over it.
What do you think? Is there any potential here?
For the record, I scored 99 out of 100… woo hoo ![]()

TwitterGrader, released by Hubspot, to grade your Twitter profile….
Thanks for checking out Twitter.Grader.
As it stands, the tool is amusing, but not that useful –yet. The longer term goal is to provide a relatively objective measure for the “power” of a Twitter user.
Some of the use cases you’ve outlined are precisely the ones we envision. For example, quickly measuring the power/reach of a potential social media hire.
I like to get early versions of new tools “out there” so I can start getting community feedback and make them better. In this regard, Website.Grader has evolved pretty well and lots of people have found it useful. We’re just looking to extend that success into other arenas that we think are relevant.

I have found that updating my Twitter feed became a breeze when I started using tools like Twitterfox on Firefox and Twitterrific on my iPhone. You don’t need to physically visit Twitter.com anymore and that’s what nails it for me.

True, but it’s still a good barometer of where you are in the Twitter universe.
Great info, thanks.
Entertaining too.
Warmly,

I completely agree with it being entertaining. My point is that a TRUE measure of where you are in the Twitter universe and in it’s effectiveness for a person’s particular business is not how you “rank” against others, but in how your followers “rank” you and how well you’re using Twitter to build good relationships with your audience.
I’m referring to business purposes
